2PM vs. 2NE1: Battle for the Gayest Hat

Filed under: advertising, Uncategorized — extrakorea @ 3:03 pm

As Brian in Jeollanam-do has informed us before, around Christmastime, Paris Baguette and Baskin Robbins hold an annual “Battle for the Gayest Hat” contest.
Last year, Paris Baguette had Kim Tae-hee modeling Smurf hats, and Baskin Robbins’ contestants were boy band Big Bang. As kumarakitty said, of the video:

I love how they chase down the terrified snowmen and basically shove their heads up the snowmens’ asses.

Actually, Korean children love to play a game called “dong-chim,” which translates as “poop-needle.” They make a “needle” by clasping their hands together, forefingers extended, and then try to sneak up behind someone and poke them right in the anus. So shoving part of your body into other people’s private parts is common to Koreans.

This year, Paris Baguette’s contenders are 2PM …

… while Baskin Robbins are being represented by 2NE1.

  1. Damn, you beat me too it.

Really, there’s no competing with last year’s snowman hat. Regarding this year’s contest, I think the penguin hate takes it, simply because I can’t stand to look at 2NE1.

    • Why the dislike for 2NE1? I actually like them a lot. For one thing, three of the four girls can actually sing well. In the Wonder Girls, the ratio is more like two-out-of-five, and other girl groups are even worse. And in English without a noticeable accent.

Gong Minzy is able to dance with real skill. Look at how she destroys the other three girls in this video. (Of course, it helps that the first just shook her butt and the second humped the wall. The third girl, Hyun-ah, was the only one who “brought it” in any way. I do feel a little uneasy with a fifteen-year-old showing so much midriff, and someone should tell her not to do “the shocker” hand gesture at the end.) So it pains me to see her wasting her potential, with a silly “sexy dance,” as at the three-minute mark in this video. However, I’ll bet you dollars-to-donuts that someone at their academy taught her to do this.

As for the fourth girl, she’s such a goofball that it’s hard not to like her. She has more personality than the nine members of Girls’ Generation put together. So I say, keep her.

One last thing … Check out Minzy’s pants. It’s M-Z Hammer Time!

      • I was right! Somebody at their academy did teach them to dance like that.

      • You’re silly, that “shocker” hand gesture represents “21” = “2ne1” = “2 and 1”

It’s a little awkward for her to dance like that, but its all “krumping” its a dance style.

P.S. I know this is from 2009, but I thought I comment anyways.

  3. Am I looking at it right? Does the pink penguin hat have a polar bear claw?

    Comment by ZenKimchi — November 30, 2009 @ 3:07 am

    • I think that the polar bear claw is part of a separate scarf.

  4. Damn, you’re really up on your K-pop.

I wrote about that Minzy dance last month, and didn’t make any friends doing it:

I saw that on TV and was like . . . huh?

Regarding singing ability, I think I said it on this blog earlier, but what is it with Korean singers who can’t sing? I mean, every time we go to the noraebang with school they pretty much all can carry a tune and sing with emotion. But why can’t any young women do it? Is it because they’re too busy dancing? I saw some bikini model on TV releasing her first album, and she did something acapela (sp?), and then I realized that if she weren’t good at wearing bikinis, there’s no way she’d have a record deal.
