Fifteen-year-old Sulli dances to “Crash into me real hard”

Filed under: music — extrakorea @ 3:40 am

Recently 15-year-old Sulli, of the girl group f(x), had a special “stage” (“stage” is Konglish for performance) on the show Inkigayo (“Popular Song”). Whoever chose her music (Gwen Stefani’s “Crash.”) should have listened to it more carefully, as we end up with an underage girl dancing to the lyrics, “Crash into me real hard.”

Drive back baby to me, fast in your car
I’m here waiting, crash into me real hard

Most Koreans aren’t fluent in English, so it could be argued that it doesn’t really matter, but I think it does. The sexual undertones are pretty obvious even to those who don’t have advanced English.

  1. imho, the words to the song don’t mean much, given the intended audience; on the other hand, the pelvic thrusting dance (1:10) is too overtly sexual to be anything except an invitation, and THAT DOES bug me when a 15 year old (or rather, the choreographer of a dance for 15 year olds) includes something that brazen.

    • The choreography isn’t original, but a series of the most popular recent K-pop dance moves (e.g. Girls’ Generation’s “Tell Me Your Wish,” T-ara’s “Bo Peep,” Super Junior’s “Sorry Sorry,” etc.). The pelvic thrusting that you’re referring to is the choreography of Hyun-ah’s “Change.” (At 17, Hyun-ah herself is underage.)

I think it’s being called the “pelvic dance,” following in the footsteps of the Brown Eyed Girls’ “hip dance” and Kara’s “butt dance.”

  2. […] @ 9:44 am You might recall that recently, 15-year-old Sulli, of the girl group f(x), did pelvic thrusts to the lyrics “Crash into me real hard.” Now Sulli has done a fashion shoot for Oh Boy magazine, and […]

  3. on these shows, it’s typical for them to dance to different US music- even the lame ones.
since most korean audiences aren’t english speakers, the lyrics are meaningless, thus not contributing to what you claim “sexual undertones” because they would’t understand them anyways.
they find whatever is catchy, upbeat, and well-suited for their choreography- which in this case, are cameos of various kpop dances.
And the dances themselves aren’t original, so it wasn’t intended as offense when bunch of underage girls dance to them.

if anything, i’d focus on what they’re wearing.

  5. Potential ignorance of the lyrics adds another layer to it, but doesn’t excuse them or the choreographers.
