Wonder Girls latest recipients of blood-for-ink fan letters

Filed under: youth — extrakorea @ 1:24 pm

You might recall that five Korean music stars received fan letters written in blood. Now the Wonder Girls can be added to this dubious club. At least this girl just cut her forearm. (Be grateful for small blessings.) Commenter “martiandoll” made this observation:

The girl seems to have written the note on the kitchen floor based on the picture of kitchen utensils behind her.

Where are her parents? I’m assuming they might be at work, so this girl and other fans have the freedom to cut themselves and write bloody letters, and take pictures of them doing it. I don’t think it’s about the idols anymore. These fans have a craving for attention that is not seen in other fans. If this were really for their idols they would know their idols would not be happy with what they are doing…but I guess not much thought goes into doing these crazy things.

Judging from the fact that South Korea has the second-highest suicide rate in the OECD, and that that it’s particularly high among young people, there’s clearly a lot of repressed depression and frustration in middle- and high-school students. This just seems to be another expression of that.

  1. […] (including the Wonder Girls themselves) have recently received letters written in blood? (See here, here, and here.) Clearly, somebody at JYP Entertainment hasn’t thought this through carefully. […]
