Wine cheaper, available in cans and cartons

Filed under: drinking, Uncategorized — extrakorea @ 10:41 am

As a result of direct importation by department stores and other major retailers, wine prices have dropped, in some cases, by up to 40 percent. Also, you can now enjoy your wine in a can or even in a waxed-paper carton.

  1. About time too, the price gouging on wine here is ridiculous and mostly plays to Koreans willingness to equate high prices with high quality and the desirability of both. Recently I had a conversation with a local professor about wine and she asked me where and what I bought. When I told her our favourites were cheap Chilean reds from E-mart, she was a bit taken aback and wanted to know why. I told her that I thought the wine shops and department stores, where she bought, jacked prices to extortionate levels for ordinary table wine that could be had at E-mart or Homeplus for much less. She nodded and said that I was the second barbarian who told her the same story. I guess there is a price to be paid for label drinking and all too many locals are willing to pay it.

  2. The prices are still being gouged. My wife recently paid 9000won for a bottle that normally sells for 17000won. The store was aware of the error and didn’t seem all too concerned about it.
